Alumnus 2019: Daniel Kopp
Executive Editor of the online journal International Politics & Society (Belgium)
Could you describe yourself in 3 words?
What drives you in your everyday work?
To shine a light on underrepresented topics that deserve more coverage and debate. To have a nuanced discussion about the European Union and the idea of Europe that goes beyond bland pro- or anti-Europeanism. To tell stories of injustices — and fight them.
What kind of change do you want to bring to your local level?
Off the top of my head: Living in Brussels I’d like to see the city develop into a more equitable, sustainable and healthy (air pollution is horrible!) city.
What idea of Europe do you wish and fight for?
A democratic, socially just Europe that can be the driver for us to live within planetary boundaries. And a Europe that recognises past and current injustices inside, at and beyond its borders.
What inspired you the most about being a part of Europe Lab?
Meeting people from organised civil society from Romania, Armenia, Russia, Ukraine and beyond was a truly inspiring experience and has encouraged me to dare more.
Are you in contact with other Alumni and do you work/do projects together?
I’m still in contact with many alumni and with some of them, we’re currently working on a documentary film project. Through another alumni, I also found out about a young journalists programme for German journalists to do research in Armenia, which I subsequently applied for and got accepted.
