The main venue of Europe Lab 2019 will be Nova Gorica.
Geographically speaking, Nova Gorica is quite unique. Situated on the border between Italy and Slovenia, the town was built only after the Second World War and has been evolving its ever-youthful identity ever since. On this place over the centuries, the Germanic, Romance and Slavic culture challenged and merged with each other. Today, Nova Gorica and Gorizia have merged seamlessly; the old town in Italy spilling over to the new town in Slovenia without border crossing points, existing together in harmony.
A stone’s throw from the town centre you can find many of the town’s cultural landmarks. Solkan, a town close by, boasts the impressive Solkan railway bridge with the largest stone arch in the world, which crosses over Soča River. The marvellous Soča River is flanked by Sveta Gora – a pilgrimage site with the famous basilica and monastery – to one side and Sabotin Hill with the Peace Park to the other. Across town, perched on a hilltop, the Kostanjevica Monastery, housing the extensive Škrabec library, and the crypt of the last descendants of the French Bourbon dynasty beckon visitors to make the walk up. Walking through town, one cannot help but admire the buildings designed by foremost Slovenian postwar architects. Everything is within walking distance: galleries, the theatre, the library, venues for social gatherings, entertainment and relaxation.
